Restus Kids, Rest Us Kids or Rest from Kids?
Hi, my name isn’t Restus and this isn’t a blog about getting rest from your kids. I’m Restu and this blog is about my kids, your kids and every kid that requires special needs learning. I don’t want to get into the debate of what constitutes special needs and even if special needs is the correct terminology. The point of this blog is to simply share ideas about how to help all kids excel and achieve their full potential, whether they have a physical, mental or social disadvantage.
I grew up in the western part of an Indonesian island called Java. In Java, there are way too few special needs educators and way too many kids that need care. When I first became a teacher, I discovered that I had a gift for connecting with kids with all sorts of learning challenges. Often, the teachers who had difficult children in their classrooms would seek advice from me on how to “deal” with them.
As many of us know, “dealing” with special needs children is an approach for confounding failure. We don’t “deal” with children, we “care” for them. I found the flawed approach of many educators was where the real problem lied. Hence, the creation of this blog.
My objective is to share relevant methods for helping educators connect with special needs children so both the educator and the child can achieve their full potential.
The ideas I share are not all mine. Some are curated from other professionals and I give full credit to those sources. Some posts are from my own experiences. The information I share is debatable and I welcome healthy and constructive criticism and deliberation in the comments section. I just ask that everyone remain respectful as we all have the same goal. You may also feel free to send me a personal email at restu@restuskids.com.
